Dusty
Holmes is a very unique artisan the likes of which you don’t come across every day. Her specialty is pine needle weaving. She gathers hundreds of pine needles found right here in Naples, Florida. Then she parboils them, removes the caps, and while the needles are still moist, weaves them one by one into a coil to form a basket.
“Using pine needles and other products of nature to create functional pieces is a great way to show that even after Mother Nature has shed her skin, human nature can still reap countless benefits.”
Dusty Holmes started out working in clay and then gradually began incorporating pine needle weaving into her clay pieces. Eventually pine needle weaving became her primary focus.
Prior to moving to Florida from New Mexico, Dusty had a career in nursing, primarily in the intensive care unit.
Transitioning to the arts has given Dusty a new way to interact with Nature and with the people around her. She has been able to do custom work for people incorporating something special from a loved one that they want woven into a basket to pass on to the next generation.
Pine needles once they are woven remain very stable for years. People who purchase her baskets can be reminded of the connection to Nature for generations to come.
Dusty Holmes has baskets in private collections across the United States, the UK, Japan, and Germany.
A selection of her baskets can be found at the Naples Botanical Garden in Naples Florida and also at the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery in Washington D,C.
It is the belief of some Native cultures that Pine is the "Peace Keeper" of the soul. It has been said one need only find the pine trees and take in their aroma to feel the tranquility of God.
The Japanese have a term that I think can describe all handmade items ,,,,"wabi sabi" which means to find the beauty in imperfections.
